How to write a product tagline that gets upvotes

In a bracket of 16 products, your tagline is doing most of the work. Voters skim a grid of logos and one-liners, and they decide in seconds whether to look closer. A vague tagline gets scrolled past; a sharp one gets the click — and the click is what turns into a vote.

Say what it is before you say why it’s clever

The most common mistake is leading with a slogan. “Ship faster. Sleep better.” sounds nice and tells the reader nothing. Start with the plain category — what the thing actually is — then earn the personality. “Postgres hosting that scales to zero” beats “The future of databases” every time, because the reader can picture it.

Name the person you’re for

A tagline that tries to be for everyone lands with no one. Narrow it. “Invoicing for freelance designers” will out-convert “Invoicing made simple,” even though the audience is smaller — because the designer reading it feels seen. Specificity reads as confidence.

Cut every word that isn’t pulling weight

Drop “platform,” “solution,” “powerful,” “seamless,” and “revolutionary.” They’re filler that every other listing also uses, so they carry no signal. Read your tagline out loud and delete anything you’d never say to a friend at a bar.

Lead with the outcome, not the mechanism

People vote for what a product does for them, not how it works under the hood. “Turn a screen recording into a step-by-step guide” is an outcome. “AI-powered documentation engine” is a mechanism. Save the mechanism for the description — the tagline is for the payoff.

A quick test before you submit

  • Could a stranger repeat what you do after reading it once? If not, simplify.
  • Does it name a specific person or job? If not, narrow it.
  • Would it still make sense with your product name removed? It should.
  • Is there a buzzword you could cut without losing meaning? Cut it.

Get the tagline right and everything downstream gets easier — the click, the visit, the vote. It’s the cheapest, highest-leverage thing you can fix before your next launch. Rewrite yours and submit your product for the next bracket.
